Our Lake Ellen Neighborhood has been included in an Orange County Community Climate Action grant with a purpose to decrease food waste in our landfills.
Turning our kitchen food waste into compost takes care of our planet by avoiding millions of lbs of methane gas. When food breaks down in a landfill, it produces methane—a greenhouse gas roughly 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide at trapping heat.
How can you participate?
Take your food waste to the compost now bins located at the North Forest Hills park. If you would like a free counter-top food collection container, contact Celeste Mayer (celestemmayer@gmail.com).

What can I put in the food waste bins?
Click on the image to download a PDF in English and Spanish which shows what is compostable and what is not.
What happens to the food waste?
Bins are exchanged every Thursday morning with fresh clean bins by Compost Now. Our neighborhood's contribution is weighed. Food waste from all neighborhoods participating in the grant is composted and then that is shared forward to a low income neighborhood with a community garden.
